BUILD YOUR
POLICY LEADERSHIP
& INFLUENCE
The Education Policy Leadership Program model is recognized as an effective framework for leadership development and advocacy skills training. A combination of in-person professional learning seminars coupled with advocacy events to engage with elected officials at the state and/or federal level create authentic learning experiences for professionals in the public education space.

CONGRESSIONAL OFFICE VISITS
Congressional staff meetings are not simply an exercise in exposure. Instead, fellows are armed with a specific policy issue and position they advocate to congressional and committee staffs. Time spent in local monthly meetings are in preparation for real advocacy work at the federal level.
RELATIONSHIP BUILDING WITH ELECTED OFFICIALS
Fellows are encouraged to build relationships with elected officials and their staffs, and to use those relationships to bring officials and staffers back to campus when appropriate.
EXPOSURE TO LARGE-SCALE FEDERAL OPERATIONS
Fellows are exposed to large-scale communications, advocacy, and lobbying operations. Example visits have included the American Enterprise Institute, the Center for American Progress, the Education Trust, Civic Nation, the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), the College Promise program, the Raben Group, the Vera Institute of Justice, the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA), Correct the Record (a pro-Hillary Clinton political action committee), ACCT, AACC, and others.

PROGRAM CALENDAR
A typical program calendar runs throughout a school year calendar beginning in September and wrapping up in May. Participants meet in-person for professional learning and networking seminars throughout the year. To put their learning into action, they participate in a state and/or federal legislative summit where they conduct meetings with elected officials and staffers to advocate for their chosen policy or piece of legislation.
