Now more than ever, it’s critical to have a strong, informed voice in policy conversations. Our specialized programs equip advocates, concerned citizens, organizations, and private interests with the knowledge, skills, and long-term strategies needed to navigate complex lobbying environments. Learn by doing advocacy for long lasting impact.
AdvocacyBuild offers professional development programs that are built around four pillars—Leadership, Policy, Networks, and Advocacy—designed to strengthen organizations via their policy and advocacy goals. Through a “learning-by-doing” approach, fellows enhance their leadership capacity, policy understanding, and influence.
LEARN TO
DO ADVOCACY,
NOT RELY ON OTHERS
TO DO IT FOR YOU.
ADVOCACY
The advocacy pillar focuses on advocacy strategies, tactics, and communications techniques. Fellows learn to develop advocacy plans based on objective analysis, data, and the political environment. Fellows’ program experiences culminate with a capstone advocacy trip to Washington, DC.
The network pillar focuses on networking and relationship building. Fellows learn to establish action-oriented and mutually beneficial relationships with colleagues, expand their range of strategies for developing and using power and influence, and build and sustain a larger and more diverse range of professional resources and contacts.
policy
The policy pillar focuses on state- and federal-level policy and politics. Fellows learn about specific policy issues, policymaking and implementation processes, the interface of local, state, and national policies, and the practices effective leaders use to function in the policy environment.
LEADERSHIP
The leadership pillar focuses on executive leadership training and professional development. Fellows develop familiarity with different types of leadership, become aware of their potential as leaders, and learn from interactions with proven leaders.
four PROGRAM PILLARS
For more than fifteen years, our partners report long-term benefits from investing in their people and building capacity within their organization. These four program pillars provide the foundation upon which learning experiences for our fellows are built.
ACTIVE & AUTHENTIC LEARNING EXPERIENCES
Fellows engage in deep conversations, policy seminars, state policy forums, leadership development, policy and advocacy projects, congressional simulations, and site visits that address important topics in policy, education, leadership, and advocacy.
NETWORKING & community
Participating in a cohort-based advocacy program gives you the power of community, strategy, and shared momentum. By learning and advocating alongside peers with common goals, you build confidence, deepen your understanding of the policy landscape, and amplify your collective voice in your state and Washington.
CUSTOMIZED EXPERIENCES
Each program creates customized experiences that respond to the fellows’ interests and the state’s cultural and political contexts. Fellows are coached to be cross-boundary leaders who assume greater responsibilities and make contributions to public policy and practice.

PROGRAM activities
Program activities balance rich learning experiences with authentic application opportunities in local and national contexts.
